Athens, GA (May 22, 2018) – Two Clarke County high school seniors have been awarded the Pomeroy Woods Legacy Student Scholarships from Peach State Federal Credit Union. Shanyia Smith, of Cedar Shoals High School, and Jaron Washington-Thomas, of Clarke Central High School each received $2,000 to assist with their college education costs.
The Pomeroy Woods Scholarships were created to honor Janet Pomeroy and Pearlie Woods’ commitment and dedication to the credit union and citizens of Clarke County. Each year, Peach State awards these scholarships to two Clarke County high school seniors on the basis of financial need, academic credentials, and a demonstrated commitment to community service.
Shanyia Smith is dually enrolled at Cedar Shoals High School and Athens Technical College. She is an active member of his community. In addition to her regular courses and being a member of the yearbook staff, Shanyia is taking college level courses. She also volunteers at Springfield Baptist Church and holds a part-time job. Shanyia plans to major in Criminal Justice at the University of Georgia with a pre-law intent.
Jaron Washington-Thomas attends Clarke Central High School and plans to use this scholarship to make a difference in the world by helping others. While completing his senior year of high school, he’s also been a member of the basketball team, plays trombone in the “Wind Ensemble”, and volunteers his free time to help others in the community. Jaron aspires to be a leader and a role model in his community and within his own family. He believes that pursuing his college degree is the first step to achieving his goals.
The Pomeroy Woods Scholarships were established in 2010 following the merger of Clarke Community Federal Credit Union into Peach State. “Clarke Community maintained a strong tradition of community service, and we know that Shanyia and Jaron will continue this tradition by furthering their education and volunteering in their communities,” said Peach State President/CEO, Marshall Boutwell.
Peach State was founded by educators more than 55 years ago and remains dedicated to supporting teachers and students. Since 2002, Peach State has awarded more than $1.3 million in scholarships and educational grants.
